This is the second volume in S.L. Shelton's unfolding story of corporate corruption in the world's governments and the adventures of a young Scott Wolfe, who is unknowingly swept into a secret war of massive proportions.
Scott Wolfe has been struggling to recover from the injuries he sustained in Europe only two months earlier—physical and emotional injuries that threaten his relationships, his peace and his sanity.
Back home and trying to ease into a routine again, his old life seems too small to contain him any longer. So when CIA Agent John Temple, asks for Scott's help hunting down a missing and possibly rogue ex-Agent, Scott jumps at the chance, despite Barb's misgivings.
Veiled in the background, sinister forces conspire to not only find the missing ex-Agent first, but to viciously block access to him and the information he is carrying, before their powerful organization is revealed.
Hamstrung by Agency policy and Scott's physical limitations, he and John have to find, contain and possibly kill ex CIA Agent, Mark Gaines.
This book was originally published under the title "2nd Amendment Remedies". Title and content have been revised and re-released as a second edition with the title "Unexpected Gaines."
Unexpected Gaines Scott Wolfe Series Book 2 edition by SL Shelton Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks
I don't know why I keep finding book series with the second volume or later, but I seem to keep doing this to myself. However, whenever I do that, it seems like the author makes it easy to jump in wherever you would like. This series is no exception!Scott Wolfe is called back into action again, to help CIA Agent John Temple track down an ex CIA Agent that has possibly went rogue. As with everything involving the CIA, everything is hush-hush, and on a need to know basis. They finally find that they are hunting Mark Gaines, and, if it comes down to it, take him out of the picture. PERMANENTLY!
Espionage stories can be a little tricky to write effectively. You have to get the right pacing to the tension, and also keep the reader engaged through the end. I am very happy to report that this book is a very compelling read, from start to finish. Like I said, I have not read the first book in the Scott Wolfe series, but I felt like I was brought up to speed fairly quickly, and didn't slow down from there. The dynamic between Scott (who is a computer “hacker”, for lack of a better word), and CIA Agent John is very entertaining, and I think they compliment each other very well by the end.
This is a great read, and fairly quick, too (Quick, not short, by the way). If you're looking for an espionage book for a rainy weekend, this is definitely one to check out.

Unexpected Gaines Scott Wolfe Series Book 2 edition by SL Shelton Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
Upon finishing the first book in the series, “Waking Wolfe,” I immediately purchased “Unexpected Gaines”. The book takes place a few months after Scott Wolfe’s rescue mission to save his girlfriend Barb from Serbian terrorists. Combine, the organization behind the Serbian mission to secure nuclear missiles has suddenly been exposed to the Department of Justice through a double cross involving their accounting records. The records are inadvertently put into the hands of ex-CIA operative Mark Gaines, who thought he was doing a favor for his DOJ friend. Their fact-finding mission turns deadly when Gaines is left holding the only information that can make sense of an attack on his life. In an effort to flush out, or intimidate Gaines, Combine attacks the only people Gaines cares about, his sister and her family. Gaines embarks on his own mission to find the people responsible for brutally murdering his sister.
CIA Agent John Temple decides to track down his former colleague, Gaines, to find out what kind of trouble he has landed in. Temple employs the help of Scott Wolfe, our “knight in shining armor,” or as the CIA refer to him, “Monkey Wrench,” to help him find Gaines before any other government agencies can track him.
I was surprised to find that the book takes place only a few months after Scott’s mission to save Barb and that he is having a hard time recovering from his experiences of being tortured and nearly killed on his personal mission in Amsterdam. He and Barb are living together, but there is tension between them. Scott believes that his “normal” life is too small after all of his experiences. He is suffering from PTSD and physically hindered from his injuries. While this was an unexpected turn in the series, I liked that it humanized Scott and grounded the story. This book could have easily glossed over all the details and turned Scott into a CIA Agent in the middle of hunting down terrorists in a foreign country, but instead it took the time to allow Scott to react like a real person, and not a cardboard character that doesn’t dwell on his experiences and runs off for another adventure. Scott has to decide for himself how these experiences have changed him and what the consequences of these changes are in his relationships, his work life, and within his own psyche. Is he still “tech support” or has he become something more than just the smart guy sitting behind a computer?
SL Shelton has redefined the action thriller for me by putting the characters at the forefront of the story. He tells the story through the emotions of the characters, as well as their actions. The reader can easily relate to the characters trauma, frustrations, and doubts. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for an action/conspiracy novel with believable, likable characters. I am hooked on the Scott Wolfe Series and give “Unexpected Gaines” 5 Stars. I am looking forward to reading “Danger Close”.
Another good one from Shelton. Spoiler alert for those who don't actually want to know what the book is about.
This one starts with Scott Wolfe home again after his rescue of Barb.
Scott was shot twice, tortured and with the help of Temple, the CIA , Lt. Marsh, his SEAL team and Kathrin made it home. They all made it home alive and recoverd some of the nukes. Not all which is something the CIA is working on.
Once home Barb became a real problem. She his friends and co-workers at TravTec have decided they will take "care" of Scott. Barb wants to make the decisions about what is good for Scott. Of course she isn't asking Scott what he wants.
Scott doesn't like being "taken care of" one bit. Scott feels he should be the one to decide his life. Not his friends or Barb. Barb's take charge attitude concerning him is really beginning to bug the hell out of Scott and Scott is realizing he doesn't love Barb and never will.
Scott is also worried about Kathrin who he hasn't heard from. Hell. He figures she would have contacted him many times by now. He hasn't heard from her and is wondering just what the hell is going on.
Kathrin was with him every step of the way looking for Barb, the rescue and shots fired and his not hearing from her is really beginning to worry him.
We also have Mark Gaines who's an ex-CIA field agent. He and his friend Dee, who works for State, have come across evidence of payoffs to those serving in the Govt. Huge payoffs to loads of Govt employee's.
Dee is killed in an ambush. Mark makes it out alive with the documents. But those behind the documents, a man named Scrypts and his top henchmen Braun now know about Mark. They also know how to draw him out so they can kill him and get those documents back.
They go after his gay sister, the love of her life and their daughter Megan in Colorado. The three of them are killed and Mark heads west seeking revenge.
Temple used to be Mark's boss and he contacts Scott to take a trip West to find Gaines and try to get him out of whatever the hell he's into.
Barb isn't keen on this but Scott is. He and Temple head for Colorado.
So begins one damned fine read.
This one has Scott, John, Johns boss Burgess, Mark, Braun, his boss Scrypts, a Scott who's sick to hell of Barb, Bon Bon, and the others running his life, a Scott who finds he's cut out for the spy game, his "other" voice and its rather sage advice, Dr. Hebron, death, destruction, murder, attempted murder, Kathrin, a Scott who uses his awesome abilities to track Gaines, a fight between Scott and Gaines, those working for Scrypts, the capture of Gaines, those who want Gaines and Scott Wolfe in the middle of one awesome read.
Five Stars and then some.
