Alphonse Mucha Art Nouveau A Vintage Coloring Book Volume 1 Alphonse Mucha Sharpshin Press Books Reviews

Although the pictures are gorgeous they are not ideal for a coloring book. Everything should be just white with black outlines but instead there is a ton of gray throughout. I think they just took his images and made them grays calendar instead of actually taking out the colored sections. Also the paper is very thin. I was hoping to use my new brush pen markers (similar to watercolor) but they bleed through. The paper feels like cheap printer paper.
Some of the images are very small and could have been much(a) bigger. The paper this book is printed on has some inconsistencies. Several of my pages have rough lines in the way the paper is made.
Kind of bummed about this coloring book. It is printed as if it was copied from a copier machine from the original ones in a book. So there are shades of grey where color would of been on the original book series already painted. And since it was copied like that the lines are faint to faint out the dark parts of what is colored. 2 stars because I have to support my favorite artist. its not his fault.
This coloring book gives what it promised. The only trouble is that many of the prints are shaded, just black and white photocopies of Mucha works that I could have done on my own. There is a lot of grey and even black which limits one in their ability to decide what new colors to apply. The cover is not a great indication of what is inside. If you've seen Mucha's "Hiver" or any other of the seasons, and the figures therein have clothing of any color, you'll just get a pre-greyed block of picture. Some parts are even dark, and the lines are not as clearly demarcated as one would expect from a professional coloring book. If you have a book of Mucha prints like I do, already, then save yourself the dough and just copy what you want and work from there. Furthermore, if you're looking for the Sarah Bernhardt's poster for Medea "Medee" or La Passion, they are not included. If that sort of thing doesn't trouble you, however, this is the book for you... maybe.
When I was a girl, I had this poster in my bedroom..no idea where I got it, but it was my favorite, beyond all others ( except maybe, my Hardy Boys exclusive that I received for joining the fan club, lol) but anyway...
Over the years, I came to learn that the artist who created the artwork, was named "Alphonse Mucha"

Completely by accident, I found an old Dover coloring book, featuring another artists renderings of Mucha posters, on eBay, and I bid on it. In the meantime, I searched , and found a newer book (This Book) available. I ended up with both, lol.

At first, I was really disappointed with the this book, because it looked like someone just googled Mucha Art, and swiped the photos, printed them out on inexpensive printer paper, and bound them into a book.

The old, Dover coloring book (from 1977) is beautiful, to me!
They BOTH have my favorite poster in them, lol.

It wasn't until I just put them side by side, turned to the same page of artwork, to take a photo, that I decided maybe the new book isn't a waste of money, after all!? I hadn't realized in my excitement, that one of the reviewers referred to the new book as a "grayscale" type book...
That still doesn't help the cheap paper issue, but...the photos are, indeed, Mucha Art.

The old book, while having both great pictures, and better paper...is another Artists interpretation, and does lack some of the smaller details...

I just wonder how the person who puts out the newer book, can get away with just swiping the pictures, and selling them in a book? Heck, I can do that! But...I wouldn't.

Anyway.... I now have what I'm calling my "Practice grayscale Mucha book(This book) and my Vintage dover Mucha poster book (rendered for coloring by Ed Sibbet,Jr., which, I'm thinking I'll have to scan and print out pictures to color, because I'm afraid to ruin it, lol)
AND... I'll finally try a grayscale coloring.

Win, win...I guess?
I thought the pictures looked sufficiently light based on the reviews of others and the available pictures, but they are simply way too dark.
Beautiful artwork poorly transformed. Pages had checkerboard pattern that still showed after coloring, Use of a blending pencil caused dark gray streaks that could not be erased. Look at Mucha works but color something else.
