Burnt Worlds HMCS Borealis Book 1 eBook SJ Madill

I found Burnt Worlds thoroughly enjoyable and well written. The premise of a junior officer having to take over command is one that is again used, but then, that ploy is often used by veteran authors of Speculative Fiction.

The hero is flawed and unsure, which is good and the helpful alien gives the story a nice bit of humor. I felt there were a few gaps in continuity and confusion about the ships used in the battle at the end.

While the book is stand alone there was openings left that could bring on a sequel.

I highly recommend BURNT WORLDS. I enjoyed the book and I think you will as well.

Burnt Worlds HMCS Borealis Book 1 eBook SJ Madill Reviews

If the author spent half the time writing about sci fi stuff as he did about drinking coffee the book would be okay. Seriously , this book goes into great detail about holding cups of coffe, but skips over 14 alien planets with zero description.
I wanted to like the book, but most of the characters are cardboard figures that we never get to know/understand.

Sap was one with potential, but he never got enough play.

I really wish that the author didn't have so many of the characters "smirk". Chief Black - a stalwart who holds the crew together, "smirks" in every single scene. A smirk is defined as "To smile in an annoying self-satisfied manner." I really doubt that a leader can inspire people by constantly smirking.
I really like all the characters in this story. They are quirky and fun. My favorite is the practical joke playing, coffee drinking alien called Sap. I am not a fan of science fiction, but this book was suggested to me so I decided to give it a try. I'm glad I did. The author is an excellent story teller. I hope to read more of his books.
An awesome, fun read that was as engaging as it was entertaining. The characters were well drawn and complex - the uncertain junior officer, Commander Dillon who is thrust into becoming Captain of the Borealis after an engineering accident kills the Captain; the Palani priestess, Amba who holds secrets about her own people and what they did hundreds of years ago - the consequences of which may affect the galaxy; Chief Black of Borealis who is like a 'mother' figure to the entire crew and the Dosh engineer, Sap Vish whose love of coffee and pranks provide a humorous counter-point to the action. A thoroughly enjoyable and recommended read.
This story is an interesting one that crosses all downs but is a very good read. It holds your attention as you go from original crises to crises; but in the end true love, dedication, integrity, and just good old fashion guts holds the sway. It is definitely worth taking the time to enjoy this book and to enjoy a young captain who learns the way to be great!
First off I must comment that this story is heavy with Canadian content. Very enjoyable to read with as one reviewer said a "Star Trek" type quality, and I do mean the original "Star Trek" which after all had a Canadian captain Kirk. Captain hooks up with a babe from another world and along with a sort of Spock character manage to save the day. I felt the characters fit the Canadian mold. Modest, but skilled. Not boastful, unsure of their qualities, but willing to do their best. One quirk of this book is the gender neutral outlook. Not only are they gay positive, but also lesbian positive, and they couple even if they aren't the same species. Lots of fun and well worth the read.
This is a winner. It has elements of science, military, aliens, battle, exploration, wonder, new technology, genocide, romance, and relationships. It had problems that had to be overcome; it had problems that had to be incorporated into their lives. There was even a mystery involved that kept me in anticipation of another set of conditions that wouldn't be solved....but were, and amazingly so. It felt like it was a much longer book because of the depth of the plot, the intensity and details that were truly inspired. The characters developed more and more as the book went along. We found out more details that were released at appropriate times, and not all at once so that we were overwhelmed by it. Can't say enough good about this book.

Without revealing plot spoilers, the book starts with a mystery, a tragedy that puts a young officer into the position of captain of a military vessel that has been attacked. People have died. They are floating at the fringes of known space facing an enemy they cannot see. Once they are able to get communications back on line, and staff repositioned to handle the repairs, they receive a call for help. Riding slowly to the rescue, they find a priestess from an alien race who's own ship has been attacked. She is the lone survivor. But even her presence so far from her homeworld presents a mystery which she is reluctant to share. Thus, we have the beginning of a wonderful space opera.

From the beginning salvo to the ending that is the most satisfactory I've read in a while, quite frankly, it was a book I had trouble putting down. Great job. Great read. I look forward to finding other works by this author.
