After author Polly Holyoke visited our elementary school, I purchased a copy of "The Neptune Project." At he end of the school year it is nearly falling apart from repeated readings, after being passed from student to student. Several students went on to check out the second book from our school library and order the third from a local bookshop.

This story is science fiction, set in the future, focused on children living in the ocean with genetic modifications to suit that lifestyle. Polly Holyoke bases these modifications on actual marine animal adaptations, which truly resonates with children. Her mix of the real and fantasy is very appealing to fifth grade students. I hope she continues to write and ignite the imaginations of my students!

The Neptune Project Polly Holyoke 8601423375014 Books Reviews

Love love love it! Fantastic characters, wonderful plot - my middle schoolers are going to live this book -, I can't wait for the next - soon please!

Update - my daughter loves it! Several of her friends have read it now too - consensus is much better than twilight (we like characters who know, yes you are worthy) much better than hunger games, love the under water world - so interesting! Oh, and we really want to see Cam in book two!
Interesting concept. Easy to read. Is the world headed in this direction?
I bought this book for my 9-year-old daughter. I picked it up to skim thru the first chapter and couldn't put it down - I read it in three sittings. I am well above the middle grade age range, but loved it. I loved the never-ending action and strong, yet reluctant female protagonist. This is a great story that will appeal to both genders from age 9ish up. I hope that Cam or Dai make a come back in the next book - I hope that there is a 2nd book! This is a GREAT read!
Thoroughly enjoyed it. Had to pick up the 2nd book in the series, too! Thought the 2nd was even better than the 1st!

Read it with my 8 year old son - he loved the idea of an underwater colony, and the dolphin interactions, but was a little disturbed by by the fighting/deaths/things lurking in the deep not to mention kids off by themselves. I can see where that would appeal to many kids, but if yours is sensitive be forewarned.
The Neptune Project has joined the ranks of those few modern books that will appeal to just about everyone. I loved it, my 13-year-old daughter loved it, and my 10 year-old son says he wants to read it. I've even recommended it to my mother. It's rare to find a book with such broad appeal, but truthfully, this story has everything. It's action-packed, from first page to last. It has complex family and friend relationships, moral dilemmas, even a nice love triangle (but perfectly appropriate for tweens). I appreciate the strong female lead, but there are several dynamic boy characters, too. And I really love the setting. It's obvious that the author is a scuba diver. The descriptions are vivid and beautiful. But my daughter and I agree, we want to SEE this story - on the big screen. And we really want a Neptune Project series!
I read this story in one sitting and enjoyed it very much. I, like a few others, found it hard to picture some of the characters, including Nere, since I didn't know their ages. But it didn't stop me from enjoying the book.

I also noticed there wasn't a big climax (major fight scene with the bad guy) at the end because there wasn't a single bad guy through the story. They were on an adventure and they finally reached the end. I've never really seen this done (no climax) before but I didn't mind it at all.

I think the age range here is quite wide since the story is limited in bad language and romance. I can see kids anywhere from eight and up enjoying this.

I would absolutely read a sequel if one comes out. I am going to recommend this book to other writers in my writing group and at local bookstores. Very well done, Polly, especially for a debut!
I had really high hopes for this book. Kids that could live in the ocean, an underwater society, a perilous journey filled with scuba divers and spears. It had the potential to be really good. I only had one problem. Nere. She was a rather stubborn adolescent who failed to grasp the seriousness of many situations until it was to late. Because of her flawed thinking and the underwater action setting, I found I could not really relate to her. I also did not like the little romance theme thrown in the book. It felt rushed and a little forced. Overall not a bad book, but not a great one either.
