I picked this book up and put it down several times. Each time I did pick it up, I was drawn into the lyrical writing, but I got impatient with what felt like a slow pace and lack of conflict. Bastian seemed like too perfect a hero. Then the book hit its stride, and wow. History, secrets, and magical elements all collide to bring the heroine Skye and the reader along on a strange and powerful journey. I'm now really looking forward to the rest of this series.Tags : Amazon.com: 9th Life (The Naming of Legends Book 1) eBook: Wendy Beck: Kindle Store, ebook,Wendy Beck,9th Life (The Naming of Legends Book 1),FICTION Romance Paranormal,NON-CLASSIFIABLE
9th Life The Naming of Legends Book 1 eBook Wendy Beck Reviews
This book was chosen as a book club choice by one of the members. Admittedly, I was apprehensive because it's not my typical genre. It took three tries before I was finally able to get into the story enough to keep reading, but then the only reason I finished reading is due to my neurotic need to finish what I start. While I admire the author for actually writing a novel and getting published (that's not exactly a small thing), it's just not my cup of tea. It seemed like fan fiction. The high reviews make me wonder if they are biased due to the author offering to email you an unpublished paragraph if you send her a link to your review.
This book will really appeal to readers who have matured beyond the Twilight-level paranormal book. The writing, symbolism, metaphysics, and world-building is highly sophisticated, but the main focus of the book is the intense relationship between Sky and Bastion--and that will hook the reader.
The really unique thing about this book is the level at which the author understands and communicates animal/human relationships. Most shape-shifter books use the animal/human relationship as a plot device. This book uses it as a deeply explored theme, too.
I began reading this story over on Goodreads, from the first chapter I was irrevocably hooked. The introduction was a little broken but I could certainly see the reasoning behind the two main characters meeting. To say I was captivated would be putting it mildly. Chapter Nineteen was as far as Goodreads had up and I was jonesing to find out more. To see it available on ? Color me thrilled. Honestly, I could not pass this up. The characters are engaging, though a little infuriating at times. There are secrets here, hidden behind their actions and the way they react to one another. You have to remind yourself that they are young, mature but of course prone to impulsive actions. They have a connection and a chemistry that I've rarely seen in such stories.
I will not delve too deeply into the details since I don't want to give too much away. Just know that this is a book you should seriously consider, especially if you are a fan of of shapeshifters and strong female leads. Skylar is a girl that does not back down, she is headstrong and yet you can tell she loves those closest to her. Her kindness shines through in her interactions with her friends and her caring of various animals throughout the story. Some parts did leave me questioning her motive and if she could really stand up to what she had to face, but in the end it was a satisfying read. I cannot tell you how happy I am that there is a second part, the ending of the first was the only thing I found lacking. It left too many questions and I had to immediately find its follow up or remain frustrated beyond belief.
All in all, this book is worth far more than its asking price of three dollars. For the story and the idea behind it, I hope to one day hold its paperback companion and add it to my collection.
I have to admit that I don't read much shifter or much new adult. I honestly picked this one up because I know the author and I love the charity aspect. That said, I'm glad I did. Full disclosure it's a little slow-moving at first. About halfway through, though, the pace picks up dramatically and it stays fast and fascinating right through 'til the end. I recommend that you just go ahead and buy the second one while you're about it, because you aren't going to want to pause in between. The whole concept, the weight of Bastian's burden, her uniqueness, the whole thing is simultaneously fresh and recognizable as a favorite trope. If you like NA shifter, I'd be willing to bet you'll love this even more than I did. One other thing, though. If you're looking for a quick, mindless read, this ain't it. There's a metaphysical depth that's going to make you think -- but in a good way!
Very interesting read. I really enjoyed the story line and the characters were written well. I am looking forward to reading more and will be recommending this book.
This was one of the rare books whose world-building and characters drew me right in to the point where I lived and breathed in the story's world, and didn't want to leave it.
9th Life is an engrossing, fascinating story of love, sacrifice, destiny, and the exploration of the lines we'd cross for that which we perceive as most important. Beautifully told, with a lyrical quality to the prose and smart, intriguing dialogue, the story had me turning the pages to find out what would happen next to the characters I've come to care about.
It starts with a thoughtful build of the relationship between the heroine Skyler and the hero Bastian, which creates a slow burn that is all the more engaging for its careful, paced progression. I found it especially enjoyable that the author didn't rush the relationship or throw in tons of action just to create a faster pace -- the quiet intensity of the building romance between Skyler and Bastian had its own fascinating tension, and had me hungry for more, wanting to read on and see what the next step would be.
The culture of the Ailuro shifters was worked into the story in a beautiful, subtle fashion that established their "otherness" in a believable, authentic way. As mentioned before, the world-building as a whole was just so realistic and well-done that I felt fully immersed in this world and all its facets.
Having read the next two installments in the series, I can say that 9th Life is the beginning of a truly amazing trilogy that touched me on the deepest level, ripped out my heart and handed it back to me with a beautiful smile. So, in short Fan-freaking-tastic.
I picked this book up and put it down several times. Each time I did pick it up, I was drawn into the lyrical writing, but I got impatient with what felt like a slow pace and lack of conflict.
